Bali as an Airport Hub

Long distance travel often means travelling through a secondary airport in order to reach your final destination.

As not all airports are able to cope with international flights, it is the usual practise for major airports to serve as hubs.  This means than many domestic flights will converge on a particular airport which also services many international destinations.  Internationally it is the same, with some airports which attract many international flights from a large number of ports are able to act as hubs as transit times through those airports can be relatively short, thanks to the sheer number of international flights they handle.

Bali is a great place to use as a hub simply because it is a wonderful place to visit, and you can relax for a few days there to break up the trip, presuming you have a bit of time on your hands.

Presently, 33 airlines offer international connections out of Bali, so if you plan your trip right you could get to your ultimate destination but have a good Bali break on the way.

For instance, if travelling to Australia you have a huge choice of onwards flights as Bali is one of the most popular international destinations for Australians, and it is the most popular destination for West Australians, with about 67 direct flights per week from Denpasar to Perth.

If your destination is New Zealand, then Air New Zealand offers direct flights to Auckland.

Airlines such as KLM and American Airlines offer flights to Bali, usually transiting through another port, such as Singapore for KLM and Hong Kong for American Airlines.  Transaero Airlines has direct flights to and from Moscow whereas Nordwind offers flights to a variety of destinations within Russia.

A number of airlines offer Hong Kong-Denpasar services, but Bali can also be reached direct from many Asian cities, including Manila, Seoul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, and, of course, Jakarta.

Qatar Airlines offers flights out of Doha and you can even visit Papua New Guinea thanks to Air Nuigini’s Denpasar to Port Moresby direct service.

With lots of connections, and a number of budget airlines servicing Bali, transiting through Denpasar is not necessarily an expensive exercise.  In fact, depending on your standard of accommodation, Bali can be done on a low budget.
