Experience the Himalayas in Nepal

The Himalayas are called the `Roof of the World’, and with good reason as the Himalayas contain many of the world’s highest peaks as well as the highest of them all, Mt Everest, which soars to a massive height of 8850 metres (29,035 feet).

To most of the world she is called Everest, but to the people of Nepal, the people who know her best of all, she is called Sagamartha, Goddess of the Sky.

It is this respect for their environment, and for the people of Nepal seeing deep-rooted meaning in every facet of their lives which makes Nepal a wonderful place to visit.

As Rishi Nepal, Managing Director of the tour company Encounters Nepal puts it, “A visit Nepal is physically challenging but mentally rewarding! It hits you within moments of arriving in Nepal. You get an overwhelming sense of friendship, history, community and spirituality. Nepal is a complex and compelling country and it’s impossible to overcome the excitement of actually being there.”

Trekking in Nepal is one of the most popular activities by visitors, but Nepal is not all about trekking alone.  There is the sheer beauty of the country.  It has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within its borders, and Nepal is not a large country by any means.

Nepal offers a tough life for its occupants; it is a country where remoteness is a way of life for many.  Although a tiny country, Nepal has 103 different ethnic groups who speak 93 different languages.  That’s what happens when you live in a high mountain valley that can be cut off by snow and ice for months at a time.

It is the hard-edged resolve which is needed by the Nepalese just to survive the harshness of ordinary life that has given them a reputation for toughness.  And if you do want to see much of Nepal on foot, then you need to be able to absorb that toughness too.

“If your visit to Nepal is more a voyage of discovery, there’s no better place in the world to soak up a truly vibrant spirit,” says Rishi Nepal.  “The warmth and kindness of the Nepalese is legendary. The abundance of Nepal’s heritage is however one of the country’s best kept secrets, so should you want to explore cultural riches, often missed by her visitors.”

And Rishi should know because his company Encounters Nepal has been organising treks and tours to Nepal her near neighbours Tibet, India and Bhutan for many years.

If you are planning a trip to Nepal, the least you could do is make your arrangements through a local Nepalese company, one which knows the country, the conditions, and its people very well indeed.
