A gun is fun on the Redneck Riviera Florida

Its official name is the Emerald Coast, a strip of coastline in Florida which abuts the Gulf of Mexico running from Pensacola to Port St. Joe, a distance of about 95 miles.

The term Emerald Coast is accurately descriptive as the beaches are formed by long, pearly white crescents of sand, and where the waters can indeed be coloured a rich, emerald green when the sun is shining and the seas are calm.

The Emerald Coast is also called the Redneck Riviera, thanks to a Tom T. Hall song about the area which made mention of Grandma’s tattoos and Bubba’s joy at devouring hot and spicy chicken wings.  And it is true, that many of the visitors do drive to the Redneck Riviera in their pick-ups, complete with the fully-loaded gun rack in the back of the cab, to enjoy a great day’s hootering and hollering in the sand.

And these beaches sure do have nice names: Gulf Breeze, Niceville, WaterColor, Seaside and Seagrove, as well as Pensacola, Panama City Beach, Navarre Beach, Okaloosa Island and Destin.

The Redneck Riviera really is a mighty fine place.  It has some fantastic fishing, particularly if you’re after game fish, and holds the annual Bay Point Billfish Invitational for those that are truly serious. Surfers also flock there to enjoy some of the best spring breaks in the Gulf.  There’s heaps of entertainment, such as water parks for the kids, designer shopping, shows, concerts, more shopping, and, of course, there’s a plethora of activities for the rednecks too: tattoo parlours, beer joints, crab shacks, burger barns and tee shirt boutiques.

Also, according to legend, in the Redneck Riviera there are plenty of high-rise condominiums with beautiful drunk skinny girls on each floor.   I just can’t think of a better reason to grow a mullet, grab a six pack and visit!
