Airline Fact File – Emirates

Emirates is the major airline of the United Arab Emirates, and is based in Dubai.  Emirates began operations in 1985 with one Boeing 737 that was leased from Pakistan International Airlines in response to a lessening of services to the region from Gulf Air.

From those humble beginnings, Emirates now has a fleet of 149 aircraft, which includes 10 Airbus A380s.  The airline now operates over 2400 passenger flights per week, including four of the world’s longest non-stop commercial flights.  From flying just one route in 1985, Emirates now flies to 108 destinations in 60 countries on 6 continents. In 2010, it was the world’s sixth largest airline in terms of the number of passengers carried, which was in excess of 27 million, and has on order another 80 A380s so as to expand its services even more.

Emirates headquarters is Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport is the largest building in the world in terms of floor space, and is being expanded so as to be able to handle 43 million passengers annually by 2011.

Emirates is a full service airline, and First Class on many of its aircraft allows passengers their own private suite, complete with mini bar and full-size bed.  And on the A380, First Class passengers have access to two showers and a spa.

Emirates was the first airline to introduce an integrated entertainment system in the back of a seat, and that system now offers passengers from 600 to 1,000 channels of entertainment and games.  It is also possible for passengers to attach laptops to their seats for use, and to re-charge their laptops whilst in the air.
