Brisbane Airtrain

One of the best ways to get from Brisbane airport to the city or the Gold Coast is via the Brisbane Airtrain.

This service is very easy to use, particularly as the Brisbane Airtrain stations are just metres from the entrance to both Brisbane’s domestic and international terminals.

To book is ridiculously easy.  You can either book online prior to arriving in Brisbane, or simply go to either the terminal counters or proceed to the platforms to purchase tickets.

At busy times, it is quicker to pre-book as there is no need to queue.  Outside of peak times the queues are quite short, so getting a ticket is not a hassle.

Trains depart every 15 minutes throughout most of the day, and every 30 minutes at night.

Whatever time you arrive, or depart, the Airtrain is the most convenient way to get into Brisbane or down to the Gold Coast.

From the airport, for about eight kilometres, the Airtrain uses an elevated track.  If you are a bit of an aviation nut you will enjoy viewing the airport activity as you watch planes taking off, landing and taxiing to their allocated gates.

You also enjoy the feeling of whizzing above the traffic on the roads, particularly at peak times when it seems to be almost at a standstill.

Having once tried to negotiate peak hour traffic from the Gold Coast to the airport, I now take the Airtrain every time.

It is both convenient and comfortable, and I don’t mind letting someone else do the driving.

The trip to the Gold Coast takes about 90 minutes, depending on which of the four Gold Coast stations you intend to disembark at.

The three most popular are Helensvale, which is closest to the theme parks.  Nerang, which is near Southport and Surfer’s Paradise, and Robina, from which there are regular bus services to Broadbeach.

For a small extra cost, you can also arrange for car transfers from those three stations direct to your hotel.

The Brisbane Airtrain does stop at all stations between the domestic terminal and the Gold Coast, and you can alight at any of those stations, and change lines at any of the hubs.

The busiest of the stations are Central and Roma Street, which are both convenient for access to most city hotels.

The real advantage of taking the Airtrain is that it is a fixed cost, even if you opt for a Gold Coast transfer. So there are no unpleasant surprises such as greater than expected taxi fares.

The Brisbane Airtrain is quick, easy and safe, and a very pleasant and efficient way to start your trip to Brisbane or the Gold Coast.
