Ice cream to make you squirm in Puerto Rico

Lares is a small town in central Puerto Rico.  There is not much her to attract tourists, except for its ice cream shop, Heladeria Lares, which has become famous for its unusual ice cream flavours.

Yes, it does have all the favourites that people expect, such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, rum and raisin, etc.  However, it is the not-so-common flavours that are produced by Halderia Lares that has people travelling miles to give it a try.

A family-run business that has been operating since 1968, the shop claims to produce about 500 ice cream flavours, but only carries about 50 flavours at any one time.

Some of the unusual flavours on sale include cod fish, rice and beans and garlic.  They also do a range of vegetable flavours such as carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato and corn.  Other flavours include rice pudding, sesame seed, a cheese and strawberry combination (I would never have thought of that!), guava, chicken and swordfish.  There are nutty flavours such as almond and peanut, but the one I’d most like to try is beer.  I know you can get a double cone, but I wonder if beer flavour also comes in a six pack?

Lares is about an hour and a half drive from Puerto Rico’s Capital San Juan.  You can’t miss the ice cream shop as it is in the main square.
