Voyager Estate Margaret River

There would be few places in the world that are as blessed with a fortunate climate, fertile soil for agriculture, outstanding landscapes and an unspoilt ecosystem as is the Margaret River region of south west Western Australia.

It is just a sensational place to visit, and one of the very good reasons for staying in the area is the opportunity to visit some very good wineries where the experience of enjoying a good drop in a wonderful setting is a fairly common event.

There are about 150 wineries in and around Margaret River. Although it is churlish to compare them all, by any measure, one of the top wineries to visit is Voyager Estate.

You are confronted by the sheer elegance of the estate from the moment you drive through the front entrance and into a perfectly aligned driveway, at the bottom of which flies a gigantic Australian flag.

One of the features of Voyager Estate is its manicured formal gardens, which are quite gorgeous. It is enough just to wander around the gardens, with its tightly clipped hedges that are arrow straight; flower-covered, arched walkway and expansive, perfectly-mown lawns.

Roses are but another feature of these colourful gardens, with over 1,000 rose bushes planted around the gardens and in two dedicated, walled rose gardens which burst into a kaleidoscope of vivid colours and tease the senses with the wafting loveliness their scent.

The Estate’s buildings have been inspired by the Cape Dutch style of architecture as is commonly found in South Africa. The stark white walls of the buildings are decorated by ornate rounded gables through which you enter into the main public areas. It is an unusual style of architecture which harks back to the 17th century and is representative of the fact that Dutch explorers were the first known Europeans to sail down the coast of Western Australia.

The public areas, such as the tasting room, the cellar and restaurant are quite formal and sophisticated, being decorated with plush furnishings, which do adequately celebrate the same revered qualities for which Voyager Estate wines are generally known.

Of course adults are more than welcome to taste the wines, for which there are a couple of alternatives. There is a seated tasting, for which you pay a fee, and enjoy the personal services of a member of the knowledgeable wine room team, or there is the less formal, but equally enjoyable, counter tastings which are complimentary, for which fewer wines are offered to taste.

Voyager Estate is located just a few minute’s drive from the centre of Margaret River and is an experience definitely worth sharing.
